3 ATS Resume Mistakes to Avoid!
.
Here’s how it works: After you submit your resume through an online application, it automatically lands in the ATS. Many systems then scan your resume, “parse” or pull out information, and rearrange your resume into a digital candidate profile. From there, recruiters or hiring managers can search the ATS by keyword and get a list of resumes that best match their search.
.
So it’s important to keep this in mind whenever you submit your resume online…that it will probably meet an ATS. To avoid confusion, here are 3 mistakes to avoid:
.
1. Too much design: An ATS has trouble parsing out your information when you use design elements, graphics, photos, icons, fancy fonts, etc. Stick to simple font and regular bullet points.
.
2. Bad content: Don’t put too much or too little information on your resume, don’t just put bullet points on the page without organizing and naming the sections. Don’t try any sneaky hacks like keyword stuffing in your content either!
.
3. Lack of keywords: At ATS looks for keywords in your resume that match the job description. Make sure your keywords start at the top and are infused into all sections of your resume.
.
Bonus: use a tool like @jobscan.co before you submit your resume to ensure it’s ATS-friendly. After you submit your resume online, you can then send a PDF-designed version of your resume directly to a recruiter/hiring contact. A real person appreciates a nicely designed resume!
