The Kubera Principle

The Kubera Principle

The Book That Will Change the World

It can be difficult balancing a full-time job, family life, and everything else that goes on in our day-to-day lives. So the thought of attending a networking event after all of that can seem daunting. But trust us, making time for networking is worth it. In fact, 85% of jobs are filled through networking according to a study done by PR News.

When you hear the word “networking” what do you think of? For some people, the word networking might conjure up images of suits shaking hands and exchanging business cards at stuffy corporate events.

But that’s not always the case. In fact, there are all sorts of industry-related networking events happening all the time. And the best part is that there’s probably one happening near you right now. all you have to do is find it.

But how do you find these types of events? And more importantly, how do you make them work for your job search? Here are a few tips:

Use Social Media

One of the best ways to find out about industry-related networking events is by using social media. Twitter is a great platform to use for this because it allows you to follow hashtags related to your industry and/or your city. For example, if you’re in the marketing industry and looking for events in Toronto, you could follow the hashtag #marketingTO. This way, you’ll be able to see tweets about upcoming events as they happen in real-time.

Another great way to use social media for your job search is by connecting with thought leaders in your industry on LinkedIn. If you see that someone you admire is attending an event, reach out and connect with them on LinkedIn. Not only will this put you on their radar but it will also give you an opportunity to learn more about the event from their perspective which can be helpful when deciding whether or not to attend.

Ask Your Contacts

If you don’t want to rely on social media to find out about events, another great option is to simply ask your contacts if they know of any upcoming industry-related networking events. Chances are at least one person in your network knows about an event happening in the near future and would be happy to let you know about it (and maybe even introduce you to some people once you get there).

Do Your Research

Once you have a list of potential events, it’s important to do your research before committing to anything. The last thing you want is to spend money on tickets and travel only to realize that the event isn’t relevant to your job search (or worse – that it’s a complete waste of time).

When researching an event, pay close attention to the speakers list and/or topics being covered. These should be relevant to what you’re looking for in a new job or else there’s really no point in attending from a job search perspective. Also, take a look at who has registered for the event (you can usually find this information on the website or Eventbrite page). Are there any familiar names or companies listed? If not, it might not be worth your time or money.

Attending industry-related networking events can be advantageous for any job seeker — but only if done correctly. With these tips in mind, you can make sure that any event you attend ends up being worth your while from a professional standpoint. So get out there and start networking!
