The American college system has transformed from a pathway to opportunity into a profit-driven machine that leaves many students drowning in debt and unprepared for the workforce. Since the Higher Education Act of 1965 expanded access to federal financial aid, tuition costs have skyrocketed by over 1,200% while wages have barely kept pace. Despite this, colleges continue to admit record numbers of students into oversaturated fields like liberal arts, communications, and psychology, knowing many degrees won’t lead to jobs. According to the Federal Reserve, 40% of college graduates now work in jobs that don’t require a degree, creating a disconnect between education and the workforce. Institutions focus more on luxury amenities like state-of-the-art gyms and dorms than academics, while grade inflation and declining standards dilute the value of a degree. These trends hit Gen Z especially hard, as they graduate into a job market flooded with degree holders and see limited returns on their massive investments in education.

Adding to these challenges, globalization and artificial intelligence now threaten entry-level jobs that Gen Z graduates would typically pursue. Companies increasingly outsource roles to countries like India, where entry-level workers are significantly cheaper, while AI is replacing jobs in fields like marketing, accounting, and even tech support. A Goldman Sachs report warns that up to 300 million jobs worldwide could be affected by AI, leaving young graduates even more vulnerable. By 2031, 72% of jobs are expected to require postsecondary education, yet nearly half of graduates will never use their degrees. For Gen Z, already burdened with student debt and entering a highly competitive, unpredictable job market, the American college dream feels more like a broken promise. This video uncovers how the system exploits students, prioritizes profit over learning, and leaves an entire generation questioning whether higher education is worth the cost.
