As an Executive Recruiter and Job Search Strategist, I have worked with many stay-at-home moms & dads looking to get back into the workforce.

It can be a daunting task, especially if you have been out of the job market for a while.

However, there are some strategies that can help stay-at-home moms land a job successfully. Here are three suggestions from me:

1. Update your skills through online courses or volunteering
One of the biggest concerns for employers when hiring stay-at-home moms is their lack of recent work experience. In order to overcome this hurdle, it’s important to update your skills and knowledge in your desired field.
Thanks to technology, there are now countless online courses and certifications available that can help you refresh your skills or even learn new ones. You can choose from a variety of platforms such as Coursera, Udemy, or LinkedIn Learning to find relevant courses.

Another way to update your skills is by volunteering in your community or local organizations. This will not only give you practical experience but also show potential employers that you have been proactive in keeping up with your industry.

2. Network, network, network
Networking is crucial for anyone looking for a job, and this is especially true for stay-at-home moms. Reach out to friends, family members, former colleagues, and other professionals in your desired field. Attend networking events and conferences related to your industry.

3. Highlight transferable skills on your resume
Even if you haven’t been working in a traditional office setting, stay-at-home moms have many transferable skills that are highly valuable in the workplace. These include time management, multitasking, organization, communication, and problem-solving skills.

4. Consider part-time or remote work options
Many companies offer part-time or remote work options, which can be a great fit for stay-at-home moms. These types of jobs allow you to have a flexible schedule that works around your family’s needs while still being able to earn an income and gain valuable experience.

5. Be confident in your decision
It’s important to remember that being a stay-at-home mom is a valid and valuable choice. While some may view it as a gap in your resume, it’s important to have confidence in your decision and the skills you have gained during this time.
