Welcome to the Dream Job America Podcast (@dreamjobamerica). In today’s episode, we look at perhaps THE most important part of the job search process – how to get that initial engagement from a potential hiring manager. We’re going to review my three-step process that helped me land over $750 million in new business (nominal dollars) over a 10-year period before I had barely reached the age of 30! But here’s the exciting part – this process isn’t just for sales; it’s your secret weapon to land your dream job!

Engagement is the key to success in today’s competitive job market. Whether you’re cold-calling, networking, or utilizing social media platforms like LinkedIn, the ability to stand out above the crowd – to *GET NOTICED* – is always the first step. If you’re looking for tried and true, successful job search strategies and techniques that actually work, then grab a pen and paper and take note of today’s job search tips.

While most sales folks and job seekers lead with a “business use case” solution (i.e. you have a problem and I am the answer), the reality is that most hiring managers / executives are simply too busy to respond to a cold outreach without some prior personal relationship. This becomes the initial challenge when conducting an executive search for a significant leadership role, irrespective of whether you are doing cold outreach to executive recruiters or the hiring manger directly.

However, you can bridge that gap by building trust and a genuine friendship using a non-traditional approach that leverages shared beliefs and areas of commonality. When you approach someone initially with sincerity and genuine interest in that person’s passions, values, and hobbies, it’s easy to create an immediate bond that transcends the typical business pitch.

Investing time upfront building mutual trust and friendship normally results in an information exchange that actually lets you make the best business case – based on the real information/true client need – while others never get the hiring manager’s time of day.

Ultimately, all effective job search tools and strategies require connecting on a deep personal level. By taking a human-centric approach, you stand out from the barrage of generic sales pitches, resume spam, and requests for meetings that find their way immediately into the trash bin.
