Don’t waste time at networking events to find successful people. From my experience over the last 5 years, these events are typically filled with job seekers, people desperately looking for clients, or those seeking friendships. Most networking events target beginners who have little value to offer.
The truth? Successful people you actually want to meet aren’t at these events – they’re busy running their businesses, spending time with family, or traveling.
Instead, use LinkedIn strategically. Find people you want to meet, send them thoughtful connection requests explaining why you want to connect and what value you can provide. The goal of networking is to connect with people who are ahead of you in business or can help solve specific problems in your career.
The only exceptions are high-level events like Forbes 30 Under 30 or major industry trade shows. Otherwise, skip the local networking events that leave you disappointed. Take action on LinkedIn, reach out to people achieving what you want to achieve, and set up coffee meetings or video calls.
Network with people who can actually move you closer to your goals, rather than attending events filled with people who are all in the same boat, looking for opportunities from others who don’t have them to give.
