IMPORTANT TIPS FOR VIRTUAL INTERVIEWS
Virtual Interviews (VIs) are as imp as Face to Face interviews & one must ensure to make a lasting impact on the interviewer. VI’s are of 2 types.
Two-way interview aka live interviews.
One-way interview aka automated interview, where the interviewer preselects the questions & the candidate can answer them within the given timelines.
Tips:
Dress to impress; ensure you look neat & dress in comfortable formals.
Wear good quality headphones to hear the hiring manager clearly. This makes the VI more engaging, productive & helps you answer confidently.
Use a pleasing tone; don’t sound overexcited, dull or nervous. Use good body language & keep your gestures small.
While stating facts/quantifying data, refer to your notes, however don’t directly keep reading from it. Be precise.
Make eye contact with the camera & not the screen. Don’t sit too far or too close to the camera.
Pick a brightly lit up room. Dingy rooms give depressing vibes. A simple white backdrop would be perfect.
Your surroundings should be clean, quiet and free from distractions. Family members walking around is a big put-off. Always lock your room door for privacy. Remember, concentration is key.
Keep your mobile phone on silent mode. Looking unprofessional, disinterested/preoccupied in the VI leaves a negative impression on the interviewer. Remember, FOCUS is the key to a great interview.
Turn off all other notifications to better focus. During screen sharing (such as resume, ppt, project drafts etc), ensure all the unwanted tabs are closed to make you look more organised.
Ensure your laptop is fully charged & internet speed, high. You don’t want to suddenly vanish & make the situation look embarrassing & disrespectful.
Ask questions, especially regarding company culture to get a sense of the environment. You could ask questions such as size of the company, how the functions are aligned, organisational hierarchy, the kind of extracurricular/employee-friendly activities conducted in the office etc.
