Physicians must recognize that embarking on new opportunities can evoke feelings of apprehension. Throughout our medical careers, we are often presented with opportunities on a silver platter: the chance to attend medical school, the privilege of completing a residency, and the pivotal moment when we step into our roles as employed physicians or enter private practice.
Venturing into uncharted territory, however, can prove to be a daunting endeavor. My earnest advice to fellow physicians is to refrain from relying solely on third-party entities such as staffing agencies. Instead, take the initiative to seek out your next opportunity starting today. Resist the urge to postpone this search until burnout looms on the horizon, be it a year or two down the road.
Begin your exploration now. While doing so, actively seek out mentors, just as we did during our residency days. In the same way mentors once guided us in surgical techniques or the intricacies of ICU care, we must ensure we have mentors to navigate the landscape of new opportunities, safeguarding us from potential exploitation.
