Besides finding job assistance, veterans exploring civilian careers can also face obstacles explaining their skills on a resume. “One of the biggest challenges for individuals coming out of the military is putting it in a language where everybody can understand,” according to Scott Sanders, president and CEO, National Association of State Workforce Agencies (NASWA).
WorkingNation sat down with Sanders at his organization’s gathering – the NASWA Veterans Conference in Washington, D.C.
Sanders says employers need to understand how military experience can oftentimes easily translate to the workplace. “ Veterans are great at following orders, obviously, it’s the life of the military, they’re very structured“ he says.
He adds “they like that day-to-day routine and I think most veterans, when given a chance, can truly shine in a position that an employer will offer to them.”
